Unsilent Night to light up Montreal’s streets
Unsilent Night is an original musical composition by Phil Kline, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. Held yearly for more than 20 years in New York City, it takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience is the performer.
Each participant plays one of four 45-minute tracks of music (on a cassette, CD, Mp3 or a specifically designed app) through a boombox or portable speakers while taking part in a mile-long procession through the city. Together, all four tracks, played quasi-synchronously through moving sources moving at different speeds, comprise Unsilent Night.
In this time of both hectic pre-holiday preparations and very short photoperiod, Unsilent Night is an opportunity to get together and share a brief moment of joy, through music and a short stroll amidst the wintry city. It is also a powerful allegory of how many of us coming together, with minimal coordination, can collaborate to create beautiful, ephemeral moments.
Louis-Félix Binette and Jennifer Kruidbos are organizing this year's Montreal edition, in what we hope will become an annual tradition. Unsilent Night Montréal takes place Wednesday December 18th at 6:45 pm, starting at the Mont-Royal metro plaza (place Gérald-Godin). It promises to be magical!
